OCTOBER EVENTS & ANNOUNCEMENTS (Falling Month)

10/02 5th Safe Falling Workshop at HA, Sunday, 6-8p This was another valuable training workshop.

10/09 Statewide Fall Prevention Conference at Pacific Beach Hotel, Tuesay, 8a-5p The theme this year was 'Reducing Falls by Design.' This annual conference was presented by the Hawaii State Department of Health (Injury Prevention Program & Developmental Disabilities Division) and co-sponsored by HMSA; Child and Family Services--Gerontology Program; Elderly Affairs Division--City and County of Honolulu; Executive Office on Agin; Hawaii Island Adult Care, Inc.; Mo'ili'ili Community Center--Elder Care Services; Ohana Pacific Rehab Services; and Project Dana. Dr Max presented Academy research on safe falling techniques and senior exercise as a luncheon keynote speaker and in a special session on safe fall training. For the entertainment of all he made bold and controversial statements -- he was a 'fall advocate' among 'fall preventers.' At a conference intended to reduce fall frequency he recommended requiring everyone to practice falling and become better (safer) fallers. He claims falling is inevitable ... injuries are preventable. See their program and registration also brouchure.

10/09 6th Safe Falling Workshop at HA, Sunday, 6-8p Immediately following the Annual Statewide Conference on Fall Prevention, this workshop will extend lessons learned at the state meeting. Open to all, this should be one of the largest meetings on falling at HA.

10/15 Fall Start-Up Meet at HA, Saturday, 1:30/2-6p This is the first local competition of the new year. There will be eight events (trampoline, double mini, tumbling, tumble-tramp, 10-bounce times, pull-ups, handstands, and bars in two sessions), four coaches, and eight judges rotating in an two 'four-ring circus sessions.' Register early ... No walk in sign-ups allowed. This is a great time to perform the skills you have at this time of the year.

10/28-30 All Japan (Elite) Championships in Koshigaya, Saitama (Near Tokyo). Nani Vercruyssen, the 2004 All-Japan Junior Champion, is competing in Japan's elite national championships as the only invited foreigner. Her and her coach will be gone 10/24-11/1 as missionaries of Aloha to promote Japan-Hawaii collaborations and to open the door for an entire team from Hawaii to compete in the All-Japan Double Mini-Tramp Championships (January 2006 in Machida), Inter-High School Trampoline Championships (August 2006 in Tochigi), Junior Trampoline Championships (August 2006 in Kumatori-Osaka), and Inter-College Championships (August 2006 in Kumatori-Osaka). Good luck Nani as an athlete and ambassador of Hawaii. See Japan Trampoline Association.

Both the Level 7s (Michelle, Krislyn, Sarah, Amy, & Nicole) and Level 8s (Nikki & Tiare) did well, despite freezing (the only air conditioned meet of the year--it should be called the 'winter classic' or the 'polar bear classic'--the only Hawaii meet that requires athletes to have warm-up pants and jackets) conditions. Michelle Radovan was the highest placer (1st AA, 34.9, and 1st FX, 9.525). Nikki Kumura was highest scoring AA with 35.475. Each meet they are getting better. Congratulations all, especially Coach Kevin (welcome to Hawaii gymnastics)!

11/1 Notice the NEW ATHLETIC TEAM TRAINING HOURS. (See New Team Schedule, Tuition, & Fees.) Thus, the tuition table has been further simplified to days per week instead of hours per week: Henceforth, team tuition for ALL TEAMS is $150 for a base rate of one day per week and $25/day for each day added (2d=175, 3d=200, 4d=225, 5d=250, 6d=275). Please review the training schedule for workout times, coaches, and costs.

NEW TUITION AND FEES REMINDER. RECREATION CLASSES -- No change in $60 membership fee, new tuition schedule takes effect in January 2005. ALL TEAM SPORTS -- No change in $60 membership (this was 1/2 of last year's $120 annual team fee for the past five years); the one time $300 annual team fee was voted down ... instead parents selected a minimum initial fee and a 'pay as you go' plan. Families from each sport will be assessed an initial team membership fee (based on an Academy portion of $35, for expenses common to all athletes, and a sport specific portion, of $50, for expenses unique to each sport group) and assessments associated with their share of each event and expenses that arise during the year. Annual Team Start-up Fees are due November 15th (tuition credit will be given for the unused portion of last year's team fee). The new tuition schedule takes effect October 1st. If you have questions ask the directors, the athletics dept chair, or the head coach of your sport. (See New Team Schedule, Tuition, & Fees.)
